A day after it emerged that Apple is taking credit score for Google including iMessage reactions on Android, the Messages app is starting to roll out the ability to go away reactions on SMS texts, which is already potential with RCS.

In mid-2020, Google rolled out the ability to ship iMessage-like reactions on RCS. Once you obtain an RCS chat, holding down on it helps you to go away one among seven emojis, together with thumbs up/down and a spread of facial expressions.

We’ve now acquired two stories of Google Messages customers having the ability to react to SMS texts. Like with RCS, you simply press to get the seven reactions, that are unchanged. If the SMS recipient is utilizing Messages, the response simply seems within the bottom-right nook.

For recipients that aren’t utilizing the Google Messages app, don’t have RCS chat enabled, or on iOS, the fallback is a textual content message with the emoji from the sender adopted by what’s being reacted to in quotes.

Google’s fallback design is nicer and extra visually distinctive than the iPhone equivalent, which simply sends a textual content description as an alternative of an emoji.

That is undoubtedly a characteristic that helps Messages customers be extra expressive. That mentioned, it is likely to be annoying over time as Android customers that converse with iPhone house owners can attest to.

In the meantime, Google Messages is working – as we enabled earlier this month – on the ability to react to an RCS chat with any emoji. These two issues might be associated.
